SUMPUR KUDUS, West Sumatra — On the night of Nov. 19, 2025, Septian “Deki” Andriki collapsed into the mud, overcome with emotion after a 13-year quest to find a flower that science had all but written off.
The former elementary school physical education teacher turned self-taught botanist had tracked rumors, false leads, and fragmentary sightings across Indonesia since 2012, searching for a single elusive species: Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic plant without leaves, stems, or roots that can grow larger than a dinner plate. It had not been confirmed in the wild for over a decade.
The breakthrough came through a local resident’s tip, leading Andriki alongside Oxford Botanic Garden’s Chris Thorogood and Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) researcher Joko Ridho Witono on an exhausting, nearly day-long trek through tiger-inhabited rainforest in Sijunjung Regency.
When the team reached the site and found a hasseltii bud unfurling its blood-red, white-speckled petals, Andriki could barely speak.
“After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” he later said. “I just cried.”
A ranger accompanying the group initially thought Andriki had been possessed by forest spirits. Thorogood described the scene differently: “I felt like the luckiest guy alive.”
A Biological Enigma Rediscovered
The footage of a grown man weeping before a flower went viral across Indonesian, British, and American media outlets. Yet behind the emotional spectacle lies a significant scientific milestone.
Rafflesia hasseltii belongs to a genus of roughly 42 recognized species — bizarre, chlorophyll-less parasites found exclusively in rainforests of Sumatra, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Brunei. These plants live invisibly inside host vine tissue for years, emerging only during rare blooming periods when they produce flowers spanning nearly a meter across. The blossoms emit a rotting-meat odor to attract carrion flies for pollination.
That combination of rarity, unpredictability, and biological strangeness makes rafflesias a holy grail for field botanists — and nearly impossible to protect.
Researchers estimate that roughly two-thirds of known hasseltii populations exist outside legally protected forests, leaving them vulnerable to logging, land conversion, and human disturbance. The 2025 rediscovery, part of a multinational research effort backed by the University of Oxford and scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, serves as both a taxonomic triumph and a conservation alarm.
The team has been collecting DNA from over a dozen rafflesia variants across Indonesia to map evolutionary relationships, hoping genetic understanding might finally explain why the plant blooms so rarely and unpredictably in the wild.
The Hidden Engine of Botanical Discovery
The Sumatran rediscovery captured headlines, but it represents just one piece of a far larger, less glamorous enterprise: the ongoing work of finding, describing, and naming new plant species — many for the first time, some possibly for the last.
At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, scientists discover and formally describe roughly 200 new plant species annually — approximately one in every ten new plants named worldwide. In 2025 alone, the Garden highlighted ten standout discoveries, ranging from a Costa Rican cactus to a Peruvian daisy family member.
One of the year’s most improbable finds required patience measured in decades. Tropical entomologist William Haber handed a cutting from an unusual cactus to former curator Barry Hammel about 20 years ago, suspecting it might differ from known moonlight cactus species. Hammel kept the cutting, waited — and finally confirmed a new species in the genus Selenicereus after the plant flowered in his Costa Rican yard.
New Discoveries From Texas to Hawaii
Not all 2025 discoveries required jungle expeditions. In Texas’s Big Bend National Park, volunteer botanist Deb Manley noticed small, fuzzy plants with maroon flowers sprouting between rocks during a desert walk. She photographed them and uploaded images to iNaturalist, triggering expert identification that led to describing an entirely new genus nicknamed the “wooly devil” — the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.
In Hawaii, researchers from the National Tropical Botanical Garden, the Smithsonian, and a robotics firm used a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to reach a previously inaccessible cliff face on Kauai. The drone returned samples of a previously unknown carnation-family plant, named Schiedea waiahuluensis — potentially the first new plant species ever discovered by drone.
Naming as Protection
Scientists estimate that thousands of plant species worldwide remain undescribed, many already declining toward extinction before formal recognition — a phenomenon researchers call “dark extinction.”
As botanists at both the Missouri Botanical Garden and Smithsonian argue, naming a species is not merely academic. It represents the necessary first step before any legal protection, funding, or conservation plan can exist. A plant without a name is, practically speaking, a plant without a defense.
Only after Rafflesia hasseltii was confirmed alive and blooming in Sumpur Kudus could researchers begin arguing, with data in hand, for stronger protections in a forest where most known populations still sit outside protected boundaries.
Each year’s tally of new species represents not simply an inventory of nature’s surprises, but a race against time — run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
